My Story

I was born and raised in Hinsdale, Illinois, and earned my BA in Journalism and Mass Communication as well as a Certificate in Writing from the University of Iowa. During college, I worked as a line cook at a wonderful restaurant in downtown Iowa City—an experience that sparked my passion for cooking, food, and hospitality. A few months after starting at the restaurant, I began a monetized food and writing blog on Substack called, "JuJu's Plate" where I published weekly recipes, food photography, and essays.  I grew up cooking alongside my mom and sister in Hinsdale and learned everything else I know from hands-on experience in the restaurant industry.

After graduation, I moved to the Greater Yellowstone area in Wyoming, where I worked as a sous and pastry chef on a vacation ranch. On the ranch, I spent long—  often fourteen-hour—days, cooking, cleaning, and managing a kitchen. I found my skills and appreciation for the craft only grew stronger.

My whole life, food has been my way of caring for others, expressing creativity, and building connections. Even during school, I found I focused much of my writing on stories found within the food world. No matter what's going on in our individual lives, everyone stops to eat. I grew up in a busy household, and I know how hard it can be to find time to create nourishing, tasty meals between work, school, sports, and travel schedules. That's why I've created Julianne's Table: to share my knowledge, passion, and care with local households, and to help make your days a little easier.  Food cultivates togetherness, and I would be privileged to be a part of that.
